A solid but not outstanding member of Kurtz's Deryni series. It has everything a loyal reader might expect--in fact, all of the major plot elements can be found in other books in the several series Kurtz wrote, though thankfully mixed up enough not to be a carbon copy of any one work. Nonetheless, for those who enjoy the books, it doesn't disappoint, with plenty of realism, vivid description, carefully described arcane rituals, and layers of machinations and plotting. A fun read, but nothing too serious.
