A powerful short story. Morrison's writing hits like a jackhammer while remaining crisp. As she has explained in other fora, she deliberately leaves things out to draw the reader into supplying them. The story is focused on race in America, to be sure, but also a great many other things. The main character suffers from PTSD following his return from Korea, just as all of the other characters have their own challenges to overcome. Morrison's characters are as real as they come and likely you'll know somebody just like this or that one. Don't let its small size fool you, it will likely leave you exhausted and drained, but glad that you read it.
